the GREEN bit (obligatory...)
In the UK, it is estimated that around £22,000,000 is spent EVERY YEAR on charcoal. Quite a lot of money up in smoke.
90% of UK Charcoal is imported. Quite a lot of money exported!
Virtually ALL bagged Charcoal is 'infused' with chemicals to make it ignite and burn. Coal dust, sodium nitrate, even waste oils can be added. Start cooking too early and these contaminants can infuse your food.
Making your own charcoal from sticks you've picked up means the product is clean and you can start cooking within 5 minutes of lighting the BBQ. We could give some lighting tips but remember, Political Leaflets burn well, so when an election comes around, you will be provided with plenty of free, unread, materials. Breaking a firelighter in half doesn't hinder the process either!
The ash from your BBQ, as it came from clean sources is safe and can be used as organic fertilizer!
In addition, you have reduced the haulage load for the 50,000 tonnes of charcoal imported and are using local renewable energy to cook with. Isn't that nice. You are still going to need to apologise to your dog for the lack of sticks though...
Aside from 'green logic', you will literally taste the difference cooking with proper charcoal. Food is nicer!
